Marcia Kay Thomson in Zimbabwe

Marcia Kay went to work with the Central Africa Mission in November, 1963 after graduating from Ozark Christian College. The mission had a large number of missionaries for several years. Since it is the work of missionaries to teach local people to do their job, Zimbabweans are now doing many of the jobs done by missionaries in the past. Marcia Kay has worked herself out of several jobs but then has gone on to other jobs. She is a bridge between the work and the supporters in the USA.

Since January 1993 she has been the manager of Central Africa Mission Evangelistic Literature Service (CAMELS). This work was started in 1965. The staff of
12 are all Zimbabweans. The assistant manager, Godfrey Makuku, has a Business Administration Degree from the University of Zimbabwe. Since he started at CAMELS in April 1993 he took a Post Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management and Compensation and was only off work the week he took his examinations.

CAMELS Print Shop prints Hymn Books in several languages and lesson materials for the churches. They also print the Bible correspondence courses for Zimbabwe Christian College. During this furlough she is making arrangements to print study guides taken from the Thompson Chain Reference Bible.

They do commercial work for many hospitals, clinics, schools individuals and businesses. Recently they started a new department, CAMELS Video Works. The equipment that M K bought to make DVD presentations of her work enables them to do video editing for local people. The nearest service of this kind is a 3 ½ hour drive from Masvingo.

Marcia Kay is the only woman on the Board of Directors of Zimbabwe Christian College. She is the only person that has taught at the college in all three of its locations. She worked with other directors to plan new buildings to prepare for the expansion and smooth running of the College. She was in Harare from 1983 to
1992 working with the College in administration and teaching.

From 1976 to 1982 she was in Masvingo teaching at the Bible College and teaching Religious and Moral education in the Government schools.

The years that she was living at Mashoko Mission and in the small town of Chiredzi she was in school administration. The schools are now in the hands of the local people with some oversight from Bob Pemberton.

Marcia Kay grew up in Central Christian Church, Mt.
Vernon, IL. This is her base of operations during furlough.
